Learning Through Sensory Play: Toddler Style
Introducing the Frog Life Cycle to Preschoolers
As a part of my Pond Week Lesson Plans, we spend day 4 learning all about how little tadpoles grow up to be frogs.
We start off by reading a book about tadpoles, and playing in our tadpole sensory bin. Then, we look at real world images of the eggs then tadpoles and frogs as they go through the life cycle.
In the Pond Week plans, there are two different size cards you can choose from that each have a real-life photo and description of the step in the frog life cycle. There is also a printable one-page diagram to display and for students to reference when they make their headbands.
Frog Life Cycle Headbands Set Up
To prepare your materials, you will need:
- Kid scissors
- Frog life cycle crown and life cycle pieces (available in both color and BW)
- Glue Sticks
- Stapler (for adult use)
Frog Life Cycle Headbands
Little learners will use their fine motor skills to cut and paste the different phases of the frog life cycle to the crown. My little ones loved sharing their learning with their parents at pick-up!
Butterfly Life Cycle Headband
Another fun headband we have made in my class is the butterfly life cycle headband from my Bug Week Lesson Plans.
Just like the Frog life cycle headband, you start by introducing the life cycle of a butterfly with the diagram and real-life picture cards. All of these are included in the Bug Week Plans.
Then gather the same materials; printouts, glue sticks, and scissors. Once little ones have glued the stages in order on their headband you can use the extender pieces to staple to their head size.

If you make any of the headbands, make sure and share them with us in our Facebook Group or on Instagram, I love seeing how you use my creations in your classroom!
