Why I Use an Affirmation Station

Why I Use an Affirmation Station

An affirmation station is a great resource to include in your preschool/kindergarten classrooms!

There are so many positive reasons to have an affirmation station in a preschool/kindergarten classroom or even at home! And it's super easy to set one up!

What is an Affirmation Station

An affirmation station is an intentional space inside the classroom or home where children go to get encouragement and affirm themselves to build self-confidence and self-worth.

Helping to grow your children's self-esteem is one of the most important skills we teach young learners, and an affirmation is a great way to help!

Benefits of an Affirmation Station

A huge benefit of an affirmation station is that it is a great resource for social emotional development that can be used daily.

Using daily positive affirmations can help children create feelings of self-worth through positive thinking. When we use the affirmation station daily in my class, I notice it helps to create happy emotions within the students.

Even our little learners need to say and hear positive affirmations about themselves, the more they say them the more they will believe them!

Positive affirmations can help:

  • Build confidence and empower kids
  • Develop coping skills to deal with strong emotions
  • Increase self-esteem

Why I use an Affirmation Station

Social emotional learning and self-regulation are HUGE skills we are working on in preschool. An affirmation station is a great way to start and end our day working on these skills in a positive, fun and engaging way.

I also love how starting our day this way continues throughout the day. The students often go to the affirmation station to give their friends an affirmation! It is super sweet to see them building relationships and showing kindness to their peers.

We also use the affirmation station to help us when we are having big feelings. After a student is upset or had a difficult time regulating, they can go over to the affirmation station to remind themselves of something positive. It helps them feel some confidence and positivity to reset themselves.

How to set up an Affirmation Station

An affirmation station is SUPER easy to set up in the classroom or at home!

Here are the supplies you are going to need:

  • Mirror- I found mine at Target
  • A corner or convenient spot for the mirror- I love that you can really use any spot in the room because it doesn't take up too much space.
  • Editable affirmation station pieces- You can find them here!
  • Laminator- This is optional, I laminated my pieces for durability
  • Velcro- I used velcro dots to attach the pieces to the mirror so the students can take them on and off

Let's set up the affirmation station!

First, I printed the affirmation pieces. I laminated mine so they are sturdier, but if you don't want to laminate you can use a heavier cardstock to print them onto. Then cut them out.

After I have all the pieces laminated and cut out, I attach velcro to the back of all the pieces and the other side of the velcro to the mirror where I want the pieces to go.

Attach the pieces to the mirror and take a step back! Admire your new affirmation station!

The last thing I do is introduce the affirmation station to the students. I let them know we have it, how to use it and encourage them to make it a part of their morning routine.

They can choose an affirmation that they think describes them, how their feeling, or even how they want to feel that day.

That's it! You have an affirmation station!
